B: Update

In today's lesson, i responded to the feedback in which Ms Fernandez left after reviewing our footage so far. The main thing in which i changed was the saturation on most shots in order to make them feel like they match and create a sense of continuity. I also time stretched the fire engine with flashing lights shots to create a more dream like feel in contrast to it being to harsh before.

In order to complete our edit we need to...

- Look at the photograph shoot at the beginning, have we another CU of the artist to use.
- Review shot of artist looking up at the tree.
- Consider slowing the shot of kitty by the trees for a more dream like feel.
- Look at the RBG levels on the artist shots.
- Slow down running, cut with deer.
- Assess the fire extinguisher shot.
- Sync, ' don't you forget'
-Too many shoes - make kitty more dreamy.

B- Update of lesson

In todays lesson i continued to edit the footage which is now edited to the track. After trying to edit the colour contrast and finding it did not look as expected we changed the saturation and brightness of some of the darker shots to ensure they are in keeping with the other shots.

After getting feedback from our work so far we have been told that we need to ensure band continuity is kept within the print work designs. This means that we need to keep the same font to create a sucessful star image.

L: Progress Update

I have been seriously ill these last few weeks and have only managed to go into school on a few occasions. My contribution to the final product so far has been:
  • I participated in four shoots: the first on a school trip to Brighton, the second in Calverley Park as a group, the third in Knole Park and at the Stables by myself and the third in Chiddingstone as a group. At each shoot we took turns in taking on multiple roles including cameraman and director.
  • I have been present and active in capturing all of our footage.
  • I was present in the early stages of editing where as a group we chose our favourite clips and began to order them.
  • Today I helped edit the last part of the video and we managed to watch the video through for the first time.

K: My contribution to todays lesson

Today's lesson I was in charge of directing the editing, finishing the music video. I did this by listening to Becki's contribution and comments on my last weeks edit and adapted the project as we went. We chose to render the whole video and watch it through to make final adjustments with the media technician commenting also; we made a list of shots which needed editing whether cut incorrectly to the track, inappropriate footage or compression/expansion of time was needed. We then collectively made these changes step by step.

I am very happy with the progress we have made so far, Becki and I have put in a lot of effort to get the project finished to the standard we wish, managing time efficiently so this week we can focus on finishing touches and colour editing.

B- My contribution to todays lesson

In today's lesson and spending time after school we have edited the footage to 3.27 completing our track. My contribution was keeping a list of changes as we watched to footage to save us from rendering every time we made a change, we then went back after and made all the changes at one time, which worked well as an editing technique. I used this technique throughout all the editing we done today as well as reviewing Kitty's edited footage and directing changes as well as throughout the rest of the edit.

We now need to make changes to the colour, contrast and brightness of all our shots to ensure that they are visually pleasing. I think that Kitty and I have both put in massive amounts of effort to get to this stage and to be keeping to the deadline, so am very pleased with our progress.

Group- Update of progress

To do list-

-Swap masks shot to introduce random characters.
-Introduce male character sooner, in place of a hand.
-Render and check cutting rate.
-Sort colour, contrast and brightness of shots.

In todays lesson-

In today's lesson we have edited these shots-
church shot
paths running= messy
Cut rock shot
not so many lanterns
tree shot shorter
shoes, long shot before CU
horse eye
Church writing too long
zoom of fire engine- take kent out

We have now fully edited our footage to the track at 3.27 seconds.

Now we have to focus on the colour, contrast and brightness.

B- Final Print work

Here is the final digipak design in which i have created for our printwork, using photography on photoshop.

K: Update

Today I continued editing we have now reached over 3 minutes 15 seconds with footage laid out in the correct order along the timeline. The music has been cut to 3 minutes 25 so we are less than a 30 seconds to go! That means I've edited 1 minute 30 in two days!

Thursday, 24 November 2011

K: Progress Update

Today I edited up to 2 minutes 15, I continued in a similar process to that we have been using before. We aim to edit our footage as quickly as we can then apply layers and filters once it is cut all to the track. We are finding the need to re render our video often when editing quite a problem as every change or cut we make un renders the footage, therefore we must ask the technicians to try and over come this problem.

K&B: Update of Lesson

Today we have edited footage up to 2 mins, we have taken a new approach to editing in which we are creating longer rough cuts rather than editing to the track straight away.

Next lesson we need to continue editing.

K: Our promotion in terms of creating an artist image

How are we representing Ben Howard across the promotional material?

We aim to represent Ben Howard as a new, unique and interesting country singer/songwriter targeting a large audience similar to that of other folk/indie artists. We will include many photographs to keep with the genre and theme of nature with images such as fields, trees and of course meat shots of the male artist to act as a promotional tool. The male character although a minor character is included in our narrative through a love story therefore further advertising the artist image and allowing the audience not only to enjoy the product but also to relate to it; increasing accessibility of the track and artist.

The techniques we have used include:

  • Using a variety of length clips, with differing cutting rate throughout, closely linked to the tempo and beat of the track. For example when the beat fastens up so does the cutting rate, and the mise en scene is similarly linked, rather than a slow and soft tree blowing in the wind we are using faster intenser footage such as the bride running. This relates to Howard's personality and story linking back to the lyrics of his song 'Follaton Wood'.
  • We aim to use a warm colour wash, orange/yellow overlaid on all the footage to connote the sense of the beauty of happiness and contrast against the stereotypical colour connotation of happiness but in-keeping with the theme of nature. This colour scheme is representative of the naturalistic settings we have used in our video connoting personality traits and signifiers of the artist and his upbringing, in rural cornwall.
  • We have suggested to use the 'old film' overlay editing filter which we will apply to certain material at the end of our editing process once it is all in the timeline in the correct order; we think this will create an 'old school' arty sense similar to Ben Howard's other music videos including 'The Wolves' therefore promoting the artist image further.
  • We have used both compression and expansion of time in order to improve the video and to make it more visually interesting and stimulating. We used particularly visceral and illustrative footage which is rich in connotation, underpinning the natural looking shots rather than more jarry digital jump cuts, therefore aiming to reflect his laid back, simplistic lifestyle in cornwall, in touch with nature and life.
  • We wanted to create quite an edgy and quirky video based on the more serious and heavy storyline of the death, therefore our editing techniques and use of particular mise en scene and exterior locations have lightened the mood to the video and made it less morbid using a warmer colour wash and more romantic illustrative imagery; thus suggesting the importance of positivity and happiness messages Ben Howard frequently promotes in his videos and lyrics.
  • We chose to use similar photographs for both print work pieces, the tour poster as the promotional advertisement and the 4 pane digipak to directly link the 3 areas together to build the fan base, so the audience can link the artist Ben Howard with the video, then to the album cover in store and directly to tour advert in a magazine, therefore widening the target audience.

In what way is our video and print work rich in connotation?

  • The meat shots of the artist display a large amount of emotion therefore connoting his feelings suggested in the song, although the lyrics melancholy to some level also happy and positive. For this reason both our video and print work behold a certain degree of seriousness based on the topic suicide but we have presented it very delicately and carefully not showing the morbidity of it but the sense of freedom and release. The video contains mise en scene of nature including trees, fields and animals connoting the idea of freedom and peace, also a church and the prop rope to put light signifiers of the darker storyline. The print work similarly uses these themes of nature and freedom with photographs appropriate to this song but also images of the male character with a down cast expression to represent his position and emotions he feels.
  • The use of nature and wildlife also connotes Ben Howard's down to earth attitude to life, making himself an accessible artist image from this key illustrative aspect.
  • By studying British cultural codes evident in many mainstream indie bands such as 'Little Comets', for example replicating the slow motion flag blowing we also chose to use iconic British locations and also coastal locations to link to the artist and his local cornish audience, therefore we chose Cornwall, Brighton and South Kent. This has ensured the video is both rich in connotation of the artist image, history and personality characteristics but also relatable a large target audience.
  • When considering Dyer's theory of two paradoxes to creating a star; the star being both extraordinary and ordinary to the consumer and being both present and absent to the audience. I can conclude we have conformed to both these paradoxes Dyer identifies, the second particularly stronger in our promotional material and video, combining both his emotional response to the situation with the use of strong non verbal language and expressions as well as the lip syncing, contrasting this to his absence where the video follows local peoples' interpretations of the event, feeling lost behind masks, upset and insecure.
  • Ben Howard although in our video is portrayed as the 'ordinary' young cornish lad, a new singer/songwriter he is still presented as extraordinary to the consumer. We chose to limit our special effects and editing techniques to keep with the down to earth and normal lifestyle he leads but with our strong link to bustling and interesting British locations such a Brighton with the use of contrasted colours do create a sense of extraordinary.
  • Ben Howard is portrayed as being present to the audience when shown in the narrative throughout the music video, continually cutting back to his emotions and lip syncing, but also absent when he is not a key aspect of the video; cutting from meat shots to the narrative focusing of the aspect of 'lost souls', 'freedom' and 'suicide' deeper.
  • Finally our promotional material is rich in connotation due to its quirkiness and authenticity promoting the video style and artist characteristics well, thus following the conventions of the indie/folk genre.

K: Tour advert progress

Here is a screen shot of the stage I am currently at for my magazine tour advert. On monday I will present this to the class and ask for improvements. For my advert I have combined elements of Ben Howard's previous posters and keeping a close link to our digipak with regards to the photographs we are using.

K&B: Update of Lesson

In todays lesson we continued to edit our footage in time to the music we now have 1 min 30 of footage. Whoooop whooop.

We have edited our lip syncing which looks amazing!

Next lesson we will continue to edit the footage to the track.

By friday we want to have edited 2 mins of the track.

And by monday the digipak and tour advert complete.

Monday, 21 November 2011

K: Update

This weekends filming went well we shot the scenes with the male character with many meat shots with more successful lip syncing to the lyrics 'don't you forget'. I also worked on my tour poster which is coming on nicely mimicking similar Ben Howard's previous posters, a large square image in the centre with a bold artist title on the top and tour information below. Below is a picture of the stage I am at.

B- Our promotion in terms of creating an artist image

How are we representing Ben Howard Across the promotional material?

Our aim was to represent Ben Howard in a very accessible singer song writer way as many other indie/ folk artists are represented like. This includes using lots of naturalistic shots such as fields, trees, and wildlife. We have underpinned this with a love story narrative in order to incorporate the artist and give the audience something to relate to making him more accessible.

The techniques we have used are...

- Using orange lighting/ colour wash throughout all our material in order to create symmetry between the different types of material. The orange is representative of the sun set in order to again create a very naturalistic setting connoting the artists image and personality traits.

- In addition to this we have used artistic shots in our material in order to make it interesting for the audience and to become rich in connotation when looking at the artists image. All the shots are natural looking though to continue the feel of love for music as opposed to digital editing.

- The main feel of our work is serious as the key focus is death although this is presented in a very un morbid way, using oranges and pretty locations to give a warm feel to the footage and to show how a positive outcome can be created through anything.

- We have also used similarly edited images when creating our print work for both the promotional advertisement and the digipak to create a professional and realistic artist image.

In what way is our video and print work rich in connotation?

- The use of nature and wildlife is a key aspect connoting the down to earth, accessible artist image in that we intend to create for Ben Howard.

- We have followed British cultural codes for example the English flag on the bike as well as from the ceiling as well as using the iconic location of Brighton and British countryside to ensure that the video is both rich in connotation for the British audience watching it as well as being reflective of Ben Howard's history and him as a person living in Britain.

- In relation to Richard Dyer's theory of there being two paradoxes from which creates a star.
1. The star being both extraordinary and ordinary to the consumer.
2. They must be both present and absent to the audience.

We have conformed to both paradoxes in which Dyer identifies although i think that the second is portrayed stronger in our promotional material. Ben Howard is mainly portrayed as ordinary in that there are no special effects and it is very singer song writer based, although the fact that he is an artist with a music video and promotional material would also create a sense of becoming extraordinary to the consumer.

In terms of Dyers second point, Ben Howard is portrayed as being present to the audience when shown in the narrative of the music video, but also absent when he is not a key aspect of the video.

Our promotional material is also rich in connotation as it is very quirky again using locations such as Brighton and the English flag as well as being very authentic, which i think works well with the style of the song and follows the conventions that music promotion from similar artists and genre's follow. For example there is also a flag used in the music video 'Isles' by Little comets. Making it rich in connotation and interesting for the audience to view.

B- Todays lesson

In today's lesson i completed my draft digipaks and printed them off in rough to ask the class which they preferred.

I then started to final edit the chosen digipak design.

In addition to this i have drafted the next 18 seconds worth of footage to the lyrics " Oh we Were young".

Next lesson i need to focus on the editing of the footage.

B- This week's Targets

This week our targets are...

- To get a complete rough cut to ensure we have enough footage to fill our whole track.

- To Answer review questions on the blog per group member

- To finish Digipak.

- To draft a tour poster.

- To draft a magazine advertisement.

K&B: Update of progress

So far we have edited Almost 45 seconds of footage cut to the song! We are very pleased with our footage although we have reached the point now In which we need the lip syncing shoot in order to continue with our editing.

Our editing progress consists of putting around 30 seconds worth of footage roughly on the time line then cutting it in time to the track, this way we do not get confused and do a section at a time.

K&B: Rough Cut

This is the rough cut of our initial beggining of our video, we have placed in the timeline and edited our footage for the first 30 seconds of our song. So far we are very happy with our out come although we do need to try to get a faster editing pace as well as coming in during free periods to ensure that we meet our deadlines.

K&B: Audience Research, Rough Cut

In today's lesson we watched a rough cut of our music video in order to get an initial opinion of our footage and our concept and to see for ourselves our filming on the big screen.

The initial reaction...
- Need to look at the lighting of some shots.
- Really love the eye shot.
- Authentic, looks really visually pleasing .
- The mise en scene looks really good.

Things to change...
- Cut fast bits to track properly.
- Interesting shots
- More random people
-Colour correction to ensure all footage links.

B- Review of edited footage

After re watching the footage Kitty and I edited yesterday there is one factor in which i think we should change. The flag in the wind shot is too long and becomes boring to watch, i think we should cut this down and fill the gap with some hair blowing in the wind. I will discuss this with Kitty in today's lesson before making the change.

Here is the shot...

K: Tour advert mock up

MOCK UP

Here is a mock up of 2 tour advert print layouts, influenced by a variety of artist's posters. I will present these to Lilli and Becki and choose a favourite. Each advert has a large bolder and artisttitle and will display a photograph in the centre.

K: Editing process

The editing process has shown to be very complex and so we have adopted an appropriate approach to sorting, cutting and editing our large amounts of footage. This process entails the following:
  1. Getting all the media from our camcorder and data disk, sorting through which files and footage we wish to use and dragging them onto the time line.
  2. Checking the order, cutting and time stretch/compressing
  3. Dragging clips together and matching them with the soundtrack and repeating.
I think the process of dragging all the footage in the time line allows us to easily access the footage and display it all so we can appropriately choose, so some is not forgotten about, this also allows us to delete and cut clips easily.

K&B: Update of Lesson

In today's lesson we created our rough cut for a class screening in tomorrows lesson. So far we have edited footage to the first 27 seconds of our video. Shots include...

- The girl

- Tree shots

- Brighton, Penshurst signs

- Portsmouth harbour shots

- Brighton Fair ground shots

- The artist taking a photograph.

Here are some screen shots of our editing process...

CF Feedback - planning

Kitty / Beccy - L4+
Well done - outstanding research into products on the blog, underpinned by critical theory. You choose relevant, challenging texts and make direct links from these research processes to your own concept development. Make sure for print ad analysis you reference in which publication the ad appeared; you will have to decide that for your own campaign.

Also - ensure that where possible video is embedded in post - Kitty your own footage from a shoot is as a link, but link doesn't work.

In terms of production, this is a clear record of your contribution to both shooting, logistical planning and amendments to the concept. It would be useful to have photographs from the shoots on the blog too or stills from footage to illustrate technical issues encountered and shot ideas. For A* evaluation you will need this detail and it is worth gathering the information while it is fresh in your mind.

You now need to ensure that you document the editing process too - from animatic to rough cut. I'd like to see how you are organising it, what challenges you face and how you are going to construct your narrative. Screenshots would be useful here as a way of using ICT in presenting your work.

Lilli L1
Lilli, your contributions are still missing from the blog, despite our agreed list of posts. You also need to comment on the other posts to show that you are contributing. At the moment, you can only achieve a L1 for planning contributions.

In terms of production, I know that you have taken part in filming, however the evidence of this needs to be on the blog; you must reflect on the shoots and clearly state your roles. As you will be doing editing, attendance is vital, otherwise the other two will have to complete those tasks for you.

We would like to see you recover marks and take part in this exciting stage - it is now up to you to catch up.

B: Update of Digipak

Today i have started my Digipak design, i have now completed...
- Track list in font
- Artists name in font
- Album name in font
- Record label logo and email address in font
- Bar code
- Other email addresses and logos

Now i need to...
- Decide which photographs to use
- Do a final layout of wording on top of photographs

B- Photo Ideas for Print work

Here are some photo ideas for the digipak in which i will be desining and creating for my part of the print work for our artist, Ben Howard.

K: Photo shoot

Today I took some more photographs for the tour advert and digipak on my SLR camera, as the sunset was beautiful. I will upload them and show them to the group to see if they wish to use them. I focused on the sunshine capturing the angular rays it reflected as well as the trees and fields to keep in with the theme of the song and video.

K&B: Update of Lesson

In today's lesson we continued to edit our footage into a final sequence cut to the track, we have managed to fill about a minute of the track so far which is a promising start. Although, we do have a lot of footage to look through which will be very time consuming for us.

Wednesday, 9 November 2011

B- Review of Church shoot.

As a group we recently went to Penshurst/ Chiddingstone in order to get some shots of the village, fields and church for our video.

This shoot went really well and we managed to get a variety of shots, including...
- The villages
- Some cottages
- Some tree shots
- A footpath which links to the lyrics of the song
- The out side of the church
- The doors of the church
- A rope hanging
- The grave yard
- A sign in the church
-The post office sign
- Some horse shots

All group members took on all roles, Filming, directing and editing the footage in order to get the best result possible.

B- Update of progress

In today's lesson Kitty and I started to put together a final edit of our video, specifically considering which shots would link the different locations in which we have used together.

In addition to this i have decided to make a 4 pane digipak so have created a template to use for this, i have also got the font in which i am going to use and a track list for the back page of the digipak.

I now need to decide which photographs to use on the digipak to be able to complete it.

B- Magazine print work analysis

The magazine album advert for 'David Ford's' album A long time ago is one which particularly stood out to me, i think that it fits with our genre and is a similar look and feel that i hope for us to achieve when creating our album advertisement.

The fact that the artists face is not included in the advertisement is very conventional of the indie/ folk genre. This signifies that the album is about singing as opposed to becoming a star making the artist persona seem very down to earth and accessible to the audience.

The visuals also show a guitar again being representative of the genre and giving the audience an insight into the type of music the artist creates as well as being a signifier of the artist as a person, the songs are from the heart and performed by him not using studios and Dj help.

The location of the photograph also act as a signifier of this, the grass in the background gives a very rural feel, again following the conventions of the genre being outside and at one with nature. This again is representative of the artist creating a star image and again allowing the audience to connect with him.

The font used is very simple with again signifies the down to earth persona of the artist and highlights the importance of the music as opposed to external appearances that a more mainstream artist may try to create.

The colour used for the font and background of the advertisements works well to create a clear message as well as being very plain and simple to read again being reflective of the artist's image.

The use of black and white anchors the album name and signifies that the picture was taken in the past, thus creating visual links to the wording and giving the audience a clear representation of the album and artist.

The use of review stars to rate the album is also effective, they allow people to see from a distance how good the album is therefore attracting more people to want to listen to the album.

K: Ben Howard Tour Advert Analysis

BEN HOWARD-Old Spring Tour 2011

This advertisement for Ben Howard's 2011 spring tour is made up of several elements, the photograph acting as the main factor, the image catching the viewers eye contact, a meat shot creating a direct and instant link to the artist.

This photograph successfully acts as a signifier for the music genre and style, the background of a field and nature directly linking to folk music with the male artist in the foreground, a promotional tool, allowing the audience to make a visual association between the male character in the photograph and the artist. The facial expression is also very powerful, Ben Howard has a downcast expression reflecting his emotional album and heart rendering songs, such like Follaton wood. No props are used with simple modern costume leaving it down the the emotion and natural environment to evoke power. Similarly the colours harmonise each other, soft pastel tones to reflect the beauty of simplicity and peace, in the slightly blurred background of the scene. Pull back focus also helps the audience viewing order, firstly their eyes catch the male character, the artist. The eye is then drawn to the natural background as a reminder of the soft and pure folk music Ben Howard makes, which is directly reminded by the large artist name title above. The artist title is very powerful taking priority at the top of the advert, a large block and blunt font in strong black colour. This font is used throughout the advert but in different sizes and colours.

This advert has been published in a surfing magazine and for this reason much of the text is based on this audience. The logo on the top right hand corner is 'SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE', appropriate for both the artist himself, his music and his target audience. Other texts included in the advert are the supporting act Chailo Sim and a quote from a magazine ' Music's next surfing phenomenon'. The font used for introducing the supporting act is the same font but with no 'bold' applied, but the artist's name in bold to emphasise her name and give further importance. The quote again is the same font but this time in white colour so it can be clearly visible over the background image on the left hand side of the advert, distinctly marked with speak marks. The source of the quote is placed on a line below in a smaller size of the same font.

After the key information is displayed in the centre of the advert and the top, around the artist's name the eye is drawn to the bottom of the page. Again the eye is drawn to the text of the largest font 'Old Pine spring tour 2011' in bold white font; followed by the tour date successfully placed bellow 'Sunday May 8th'. This works particularly well as it maintains the white font style but is placed in a black box to give power and emphasis on the date. The text along side the tour date is the location information the penultimate eye catcher; underlised and capitalised to give a unique importance. The text below on the bottom of the page is marginalised to minimise the importance of it.

From analysing this text I have notice that compositionally, text and photographs must be placed very carefully on the page as to where the viewer will immediately look. Also that text size, font and whether a bold or underlined edit is applied is vital so the viewer will look at the most important text first such as the date and location, but ultimately the title of the artist's name should take pride position on the advert with the largest text size. The colours must harmonise each other and compliment both the image whether a graphic design or photograph as shown in this example and the text used.

K: Print work pictures

Looking through the images and a few taken on yesterday's shoot, I have edited a selection we may use for our printwork, including the digipak and my tour advert.

K&B: 3 Weeks to go!

With 3 weeks to go it is vital we crack on with our editing, to start this process we must finalise the order of shots:

  1. (17 seconds instrumental) flag, bike with flag, fair ground, laterns, haybales, pan of calverly, road, water

  2. brighton water shot, portsmouth seagulls.

  3. Tree shots

  4. Girl shots

  5. Boy shots

  6. Driving shots

  7. Fire station

  8. Calverly

  9. Church

  10. Grave

After our recce at Chiddingstone, today we will be going filming in the village. Although the weather is miserable we cannot waste time so we aim to film:

  • Horse shots

  • Church

  • Village

  • Feet shot

B- Paper template of DigiPak

Here is the template of our digipak which i have created from paper. This gives us a clear outline of what we need to achieve when creating our digipak. The template includes, Our font, wording, track list and some images similar to those in which we want to achieve in order inspire us and help to plan our final piece. Here are some pictures...

Since designing this we have decided to create a 4 pane digipak, here are the designs for this.

K: Ben Howard tour poster

K: Shoot

Here is a short film I created from a trip to devon. Although I originally intended on filming this on the school HD camera so we could incorporate it into our video there were problems with hand over so I did a quick sketch on my personal camera. Here I experimented with pull back focus which proved a lot harder than first anticipated and looking at rule of thirds closely.

See: Ben Howard- The Wolves

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYw08hHedD0

K: Shoot Analysis

Todays shoot of our male character lip syncing went well. Although very challenging to exactly sync the lip movement to the lyrics I believed we did achieve it, I captured a variety of angles and attempts so we can select from a larger amount of footage and again cut from different depth of fields and angles.

However as presumed the weather was not as wished, a continual problem we are facing due to our choice of using exterior locations. The sky was a dull grey however I hope this problem can be resolved when editing.

I will post stills from the shoot shortly.

B- This week's Targets

- To complete the animatic to fill our whole track.
- To make a rough cut to the track.
- To plan print work
- To upload this weekends footage.

My Progress today-

In todays lesson i created a template for our 8 pane digipak in photoshop.
I also created a draft Digipak template out of paper with things such as fonts, pictures and track listings on in order to plan for our final digipak.

B- Photo Inspiration for digipak

Here are some pictures of our artist 'Ben Howard' which have particularly inspired me for using in our digipak. As we are using photography for our digipak i feel that one picture should be of the artist. I particularly think the use of lighting and location in these pictures is successful and is the same style in which we aim to create in our digipak/ poster design.
